When Is Physiotherapy Intervention Appropriate?
Physiotherapy is most effective when treatment focuses on the true structural cause of jaw dysfunction rather than only settling symptoms.

Physiotherapy intervention is most appropriate when treatment is directed toward the problematic structure.
From a treatment perspective, the earlier the better. Most jaw problems develop over many years. With the right approach, many can be corrected permanently, although improvement often takes time.
Ignoring early clicking or stiffness leaves you open to greater problems later. Long term neglect can lead to disc displacement, locking, and joint destruction.
Common remedies such as medication, splints, massage, muscle relaxation exercises, or ultrasound often focus on easing symptoms. They may settle discomfort but do not necessarily correct the underlying problem.
The key to eliminating TMD is identifying and treating the initial structural issue. In my experience, this has very little to do with muscles or teeth and much more to do with ligament tightening and joint mechanics.
Clicky Jaws outlines a structured approach:
- Systematically assess the jaw joints.
- Understand how ligament tightness affects alignment and creates clicking.
- Use simple and effective exercises to correct the problem.
- Measure jaw movement to track improvement.
In clinical follow up of over 90 patients treated using The Latimer Technique, more than 80 percent returned to normal, click free function within eight treatments.
The goal is simple: restore normal jaw movement and return to a life without TMD or jaw clicking.
